Choose a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil in beds or borders.
If growing in pots, choose a fairly large pot with good drainage. You may need to re-pot as the plant grows.
Plant two close together (1.5m-2m apart) to aid pollination.
Growing tips
The flowers usually come out in Feb/Mar time often before all our bees and other pollinators get going for the year, so by planting in pairs you increase chances of wind pollination.
If you only have one, you may choose to hand pollinate when the plant is in flower. You can do this by dabbing from flower to flower with a child’s paintbrush!
Keep the soil moist throughout the first growing season. In later years, water thoroughly on a weekly basis during prolonged dry spells.
Keep them weed-free and apply an annual mulch.
Remove dead/damaged branches after fruiting in the first 2-3 years. Thereafter, no pruning is required
Harvesting
Fruits will ripen for harvesting in the summer from July through to August.
